Oregon, Ohio

When it comes to Lake Erie getaways near Toledo, the town of Oregon is perfect! Located on Maumee Bay just across the river from Toledo, Oregon is a great quick escape on Lake Erie. Starting with Maumee Bay State Park, there are over 1,000 acres of protected land along Lake Erie. In the winter, grab some snowshoes and bring a thermos of hot soup for a romantic hike through the woods. In the summer, hit the beach at Lake Erie or on the inland lake for warmer water. Picnic areas and grills mean you can cook up a romantic picnic dinner on the beach. With an on-site lodge, you can spend your entire getaway at Maumee Bay.

When it comes to Lake Erie getaways in the summer, not much can compare to Kelleys Island. First, you have to take a ferry to reach the island. Boat rides are pretty much always romantic, right? This quiet island is the perfect place to relax and recharge for a quick getaway on Lake Erie. Kelleys Island State Park takes up a good portion of the island, so you can enjoy hiking trails and a swimming beach. The island has lots of cute inns and restaurants, yet plenty of space to unwind and enjoy your downtime. You can visit Kelleys Island in the winter, but you’ll have to take an airplane as the ferries can’t run when the lake freezes over!

South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay), Ohio

If you like the idea of a Lake Erie island getaway, but want a bit more atmosphere than Kelleys Island, check out South Bass Island. Most famous for Put-in-Bay, this is definitely more of a party scene than other Lake Erie getaways, but sometimes it’s fun to let loose a little! The entire island is less than four miles long, and you have to take another ferry to get there. There are lots of fun touristy things to do on Put-in-Bay, and you can explore the entire island by golf cart! If you visit in the shoulder seasons, you’re likely to find a quieter scene with lots of cute inns and hotels to choose from.

Lakeside Chautauqua, Ohio

This unique lakeside community offers a different kind of Lake Erie getaway. With a background in the Methodist Church, Lakeside Chautauqua has become a favorite lakeside getaway for families and couples for decades. A visit here is like a trip back in time, when things were simpler, and people could relax and enjoy their downtime without constant connection to the outside world.
