What is Glamping?

Glamping is a term for “glamorous camping” and started to become popular in the late ‘90s and ‘00s during various international recessions, as travelers looked for more affordable ways to travel. Glamping can mean different things to different people. For travelers used to backcountry camping, just having a shower might be considered glamping. At some resorts, glamping can cost more than $500 per night, with butlers to start your campfire.

Essentially, glamping is camping with a little less “roughing it.” Whether that means sleeping in an upgraded tent, a cabin, treehouse or yurt, glamping is more popular than ever before, and glamping opportunities are popping up everywhere.

What is a Yurt?

Yurts may have been the original version of glamping, although they were initially designed for mobility, not luxury. Yurts date back to nomadic tribes of Mongolia in 600 BCE; the portable structures were easy to disassemble and move to a new location. A yurt is a round structure made of canvas stretched across wood ribs.

In modern times, yurts became a popular lodging option for U.S. State Parks and National Forests. Backcountry yurts are commonly used by cross-country skiers in places like Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. As the popularity of glamping grows, more destinations are adding yurts as a lodging option for travelers looking for an alternative to a traditional hotel or camping experience. There are many places where travelers can sleep in yurts in Ohio; with everyone from state parks to luxury lodges offering yurt rental in Ohio.

What Does the Inside of a Yurt Look Like?

Yurts can vary greatly but in general, a yurt is one large, round room with a skylight in the center of the ceiling. Usually, the wooden ribs that hold up the structure are visible from inside the yurt, although this may be covered for aesthetics. Some of the more luxurious yurts may have partitions to add privacy in the yurt, especially those that have been equipped with a bathroom. Yurt design and decoration range from minimalist and rustic to five-star.

Our Yurt Glamping Experience:

Checking into the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls, the friendly staff gave us instructions to accessing our yurt and directions to where to park. Guests of the yurts have their own parking lot and wagons to haul your belongings (it’s a short walk and a fun way to haul your belongings).

We stayed in the yurt named Firefly. After punching in the unique access door code, we couldn’t help but smile as we entered the yurt. A bright and cozy space welcomed us with cute décor that complemented the Douglas Fir wood frame and white insulated walls. The gas log fireplace framed by two wooden rocking chairs looked like the perfect spot to relax and read a book. We placed our snacks in the kitchenette, then took a board game outside to play on the attached deck. We sat outside playing games, then decided to lounge in the hammocks, which is always fun trying to get in and out of! 😉

After enjoying the outdoors and each other’s company, we followed the paved path to the Inn for dinner. The Inn’s onsite restaurant, Kindred Spirits, provides casual fine-dining and serves local gourmet meals. The restaurant is located in the property’s original 1840’s log cabin, making it a neat place to dine for history lovers.

Full from dinner, we walked back to our yurt, taking in the clear, star-filled night sky. We both decided to read a book and snuggle in the comfy king size bed. We watched the stars from the skylight and slept like a baby. The next morning, we awoke refreshed and walked to the Inn for the complimentary breakfast. While this time we opted not to get spa treatments, we will definitely add them to our list for the next visit to the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls.
